Conservative AND Green?

Recently I had lunch with a dear friend and fellow conservative.  We stopped at One More Cup afterwards.  One More Cup uses only fair trade coffee.  It’s milk comes from a local dairy farm and is hormone and antibiotic free.  Much to my delight, baked goods sans gluten, dairy, nuts and soy were sold.  We both ordered a root beer chai.  I thought I had landed in heaven.  I also realized that some of my friends would have thought it was a little too, I don’t know… liberal.  OK, this shouldn’t be that hard, but it is.  I struggle with it.  Should I talk about it?  What if I offend someone?  I can’t take it anymore!  I’m going to just lay it out there.  I’ll apologize in advance if I offend you.  That’s not my intent.  I want to make you think.  I want to challenge the stereotype.  I have a confession to make.

I’m a conservative AND I care about being green.

That’s not all.  Oh yeah, there’s more.

I want to be green but…wait for it… I don’t believe in global warming.  (I apologized in advance, remember?) At least not in the way it’s most often presented to us.

As a Christian, I believe that the Earth was given to us and for us.  I also believe we are charged with taking care of it.  As for being a Conservative, well… the very root of the word is “conserve”.   Frankly, being green is good for my health and good for my community as well as being good for our Earth.

When we buy organic, we support chemical free soil.  When we feed ourselves organic we provide more nutrition to our cells as well as avoiding artificial hormones, chemicals and pesticides, increasing wellness.  When we buy local, we conserve oil and gas that doesn’t have to be used to transport food and goods.  Buying local also generally means less preservatives due to the shorter time from source to consumer.  Turn off the lights and you conserve energy and your bank account.  Same for ditching the plastic water bottle with the added benefit of avoiding the chemicals in the plastic.

I am proud that Bioceutica actively walks it’s talk when it comes to green initiatives.  We don’t use acrylic packaging opting instead for safe plastics and post consumer packaging.  Our products are manufactured using carbon neutral certificates provided through our Ethos subscriptions.  Ethos also supports other companies that share our vision including AMCO Farms and  American Forests.  Even our car program utilized hybrids.

Personally, I’m proud to be a board member of Green Wish.  Green Wish is a non-profit that benefits local, green organizations.  Kansas City’s new chapter will have an official launch in January.  Be watching for more news on that.  It’s going to be something very special.

So let’s be clear.  This makes perfect sense.  My conservative nature means I believe in taking personal responsibility.  Being wasteful is not responsible…so…I want to take reduce, reuse, recycle to another level.  It’s not just about me or even me and my family.  I can do more.

Kansas City’s Team

It’s not about politics, I promise.  Until fairly recently, I volunteered in politics.   My involvement waxed and then waned over the years.  Now I find the waxing cycle has begun again, but in a whole new way.  [Read more…]

Being Present

Waking up this morning, I was filled with anticipation for the day.  I didn’t sleep particularly well.  The monkey mind took over a bit.  I was filled with prayers of peace, comfort and healing for those affected by the Boston Marathon bombings.  At the same time, I was overcome with immense feelings of gratitude for all that I have.

Today I challenge each of you to be present.  I love to dream.  I am a goal setter.  I am ambitious…driven.  Starting today I choose to not let goals overshadow my ability to enjoy today and to be grateful for right now.   I guess that IS my goal.  Oh, and I have another….to encourage you to be present and grateful as well.

Stop right now.  Who do you love?  Who loves you?  Tell them.  Thank them.  It’s a great way to start your day.

Hugs to each and every one of you!  Make it a great day!  Maria

Entrepreneur? Employee? Am I a 2%er?

There’s been a lot of talk recently about the top 2%.  The 2% I want to talk about today are not necessarily the top 2% of taxpayers, although some are.  Ask yourself, if you COULD be in the top 2% that earn enough to make them the top taxpayers would you want to be? [Read more…]
