Can a sex offender live near a school?

When I speak to groups one of my goals is to educate the audience about laws in their state.  I correct misinformation.  This is becoming more and more difficult as laws continually change and the Missing Sexual Offender Center continues to broaden it’s reach.  I need your help to protect our children.

Often people are under the impression that it is against the law for a convicted sexual predator to live within 1000 feet or 5oo feet or a mile or any variety of distances from a school, park, daycare, etc.  This is often not the case.  In Kansas, the state where I reside, there are currently no restrictions on where a sexual predator may reside.  Across the state line, in Missouri, there is.  Currently, certain sex offenders convicted of particular crimes against children are prohibited from living taking up residence within 1000 feet of a school or childcare facility.

The value of such a restriction is not being debated today.  We simply want the public to know the truth.  Truth is power.

The Missing Sexual Offender Center is run by a small and solely volunteer army.  If you would like to help, please send me the link to the law regarding sex offenders residing near schools in your state.  We will compile this into a current and easy to comprehend table for our readers.  I encourage you to share this blog on your social media sites to encourage more participation.  We have links to Kansas and Missouri sources below.  Just 48 states to go.

  1. The Department of Correction decides where and how close a sex offender can live to a school or daycare center based on a decision matrix.

Perhaps where you live but state law in Kansas does not dictate a particular distance that an offender must reside away from schools and daycares. I do know every state differs and that causes it’s own problems.
