What is this site about?

Now that I have this website up and running, it’s time for a post to go with it.  I can’t wait to see where it shows up on the page!  I couldn’t have done this without the help of Terri from TST Business Strategies.  Now I’m trying to figure out things as I go along.  So I’m really not kidding when I say I’m not sure where this post will show up.

We all have complicated lives.  We have things in our past that affect how we live in the present and how we view the future.   Mine is no different.  The only difference is I’m going to talk freely about it.  I’m going to put it all out there with the intention of using it to help others.   Get ready.  As my friend and mentor, Cathi likes to say, “I’m a lot.”  No, really.

The need for this website became apparent when business associates that I have known for some time expressed surprise when they learned that I was a featured speaker for a women’s networking group.  “How did I not know you founded a not-for-profit?” exclaimed one.  “I can’t believe you haven’t shared that!” said another.  I looked at them and just shook my head.  I had done it again.  I am a survivor.  I gave up being a victim a long time ago.  However, one of the “side effects” of sexual abuse is the feeling that everyone knows.  Okay, not everyone, but anyone who knows me.  These women knew me.  We belong to the same organization.  We serve on the same charity event board.  We do business with each other.  Of course they knew.  Only… they didn’t.

I am a busy wife, mother, grandmother and business woman.  A former public school teacher,  I own a preschool and in-home daycare that I run with the beautiful mother of my youngest granddaughter.  I have a passion for children and a passion for lifting women up and helping them recognize their beauty.  I fulfill those passions with my Apriori Beauty business and my daycare.  I am also a survivor of sexual abuse.   I heard long ago that “the best revenge was living well.”  That fueled my mission.  Being a survivor does not make me special.  At least 25% of the women that will read this share that experience with me.  That’s not okay.  THAT became my mission.

At first, it was to absolve my own guilt for not telling.  Then, it was to protect children.  Now, it’s so much bigger.  Now my goal is to speak to a group (or even a single person) about the sexual predator registry, how it works and doesn’t work, to tell my story and to have every single person look at me as if I have two heads.  I want the people in the room to question my credibility because I want what I have to say to be completely OUTRAGEOUS!  I dream of a room where NO ONE knows anyone who has been a victim of a sexual assault.  Not because everyone is keeping secrets, but because we have become aware, educated and we no longer tolerate it!

Until then, I will teach children and help them to become strong, healthy and happy young people.  I will continue to help women become stronger and healthier, both physically and financially.   I will also make a concerted effort beginning with this site and this post to be more open so that I can reach more people and protect more children.

I hope you will take a look around.  Join me at a Champagne, Chocolate and Change event.  Invite me to speak to your organization.  Visit again.  I promise that my next post will be lighter.  A funny daycare story or a simple “Did You Know” tip should do the trick.  Until then, recognize your beauty and show someone else theirs.  It makes the world better.
